Deadpool director Tim Miller recently walked away from the film’s sequel over creative differences with star Ryan Reynolds, but it didn’t take the Internet long to find a suitable replacement: Quentin Tarantino. As the Hollywood Reporter notes, an online petition to pair Tarantino with Marvel’s gleefully irreverent superhero has already collected 7,000 signatures and counting.
Before you get too excited at the prospect of the filthiest, most violent superhero film imaginable, hold on just a second. There’s a roughly zero chance that Tarantino would actually sign on to direct Deadpool 2, given the fact that a.) He already has his own cinematic universe to work in, and b.) He made some harsh comments last year concerning Disney (which owns Marvel) and their attempt to strong-arm the Los Angeles Cinerama Dome into showing Star Wars: The Force Awakens over his own The Hateful Eight.
Still, the petition’s creator, Carl Champion Jr., makes a few compelling points. “If there was ever a chance to see Tarantino do a project almost guaranteed to make a billion dollars, this is it,” he writes. “We got a great taste of what this could be like in Kill Bill, but imagine having a guy like Tarantino write dialogue for ‘The Merc with the Mouth’! It would be so glorious.”
Reynolds has shown a willingness to listen to fans when it comes to Deadpool, so maybe this petition isn’t as crazy as it may seem. In any case, there’s no danger of Deadpool 2 stalling out in production. The first film in Marvel’s newest franchise was a box-office smash, and studio execs are anxious to keep the momentum rolling with the sequel.
If you so desire, throw your support behind the petition and sign on the dotted line.
